Product Review
Amazon.com essential recording
Hank 101. Country 101. After 27 years in print as 24 Greatest Hits, Mercury kindly reduced it to 20 Greatest Hits. It's still excellent value, and it's still sobering to realize that Hank recorded just 66 songs during his lifetime, almost all of them essential. Here are those that serve as a working definition of country music, and as an admonition to artists who try to get too wordy or try to lose themselves in minor keys. "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Honky-Tonk Blues," "Cold, Cold Heart," "Lovesick Blues," "You Win Again," "I Can't Help It," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," and the rest. Fifty years later, they still have the power to move, and the power to shape modern country music. --Colin Escott

Summary: Great CD 2010-08-04
Comment: For any Hank Williams, sr. fans, this is a great album. It has my favorite song by him, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", along with some other classics. He has a rich, unique voice and some wonderful, original hits. I don't even really care for country music all that much, but, in my opinion, Hank, Sr. was one of the best country musicians of all time.

Comment: Hank Williams is country music's founding father. From his songwriting skill to lifestyle choices to his premature death, he has been covered and copied ever since. Every country singer who has ever picked up a guitar can at least fumble thru "Your Cheatin' Heart" or any one of a dozen of Hank's best known tunes. He's been covered by non-country artists such as John Fogerty, Norah Jones, George Thorogood, and Cowboy Junkies, to name a few.
Before Hank, there was hillbilly and bluegrass and gospel.
After Hank, there was country music.

Comment: If you are into Americana and music this is a MUST BUY. The guy had so much soul and the band plays like the all-stars they are. You want to talk about a pocket? This rhythm section has a pocket that is relentless. Hank is transcendent and the lead and slide guitars and fiddles are spectacular. It does not get better than this.

Comment: Whether I liked it or not, I grew up with Hank Williams and what was known as "country-western". Hank Williams was my father's favorite. When my father died in 1991, one of my brothers purchased a greatest hits tape and we laughed because it brought back so many memories. When I saw today's deal, I knew I had to add it to my collection. As I listened to the previews, I realized that I knew the words to these songs and it took me back to a time that is sometimes forgotten.
Thanks Amazon for throwing a twist into the mix!

Comment: No one sings the country blues like Hank Williams. One of the very few country artists I enjoy. A great artist of his time. Great in any time.
