Hollywood loved this story so much they remade it every 20 years or so for much of the 20th century; Barbra Streisand imbued it with so much forceful persona in 1976 that they haven't touched it since. The romantic/musical pairing of Streisand and Kris Kristofferson (chosen when no less than Elvis Presley turned the role down) may have been one of the era's strangest but, anchored by Streisand's elegant, Oscar-winning hit theme "Evergreen," it nonetheless yielded the biggest-selling album of the singer's career to date. That neither star is particularly convincing as rock icons--particularly Her Divaness--seems beyond the point of this fable. Instead, both stars take the opportunity to stretch outside their usual personas a bit, Streisand with the R&B teaser "Queen Bee" and confessional "Woman of the Moon," Kristofferson on rousing, theatrical fare like "Watch Closely Now" and "Hellacious Acres." --Jerry McCulley

Summary: The 3rd "A Star is Born" -- a more contemporary version 2010-05-29
Comment: "A Star is Born" was made 3 times. The first was Esther becoming a famous actor under the wings of a legendary actor who was on his way out. That is the basic theme of all three movies. Old discovers new. The first starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The latter two were musical versions. The first remake starred Judy Garland and James Mason (in one of his best roles). The 2nd remake is the one I purchased starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristopherson. The music is much more contemporary, even in today's market. Some wonderful love songs came out of this movie. The classic is "Evergreen" which is done as a BS solo and a duet with KK. There is unbelievable chemistry between the two of them. And BS's acting is wonderful and believable as a no one enjoying the steps to fame in the arms of her soulmate. It will bring you to tears as did the Judy Garland version. I highly recommend this for chick-flick night. The music is great and the plot keeps you intrigued.

Comment: When I first saw the movie, I fell absolutely in love with the music. I was wowed by both Barbra and Kristofferson. I ran out and purchased this soundtrack. This was about a year ago. It remains in my easy to reach stack of favorite soundtracks/cds. I love it. It is an absolutely groovey, funky, and lovely compilation of music that went perfect with the film and stands strong by itself.
