Product Review

Johnny Cash s fourth collaboration with producer Rick Rubin for Rubin s American Recordings label was the most successful. Thanks to the popularity of Cash s heartbreaking interpretation of the Nine Inch Nails balled Hurt, American IV: The Man Comes Around became his first non-compilation to go gold in 30 years. The final Cash album released during his lifetime, the spare The Man Comes Around won Album of the Year at the 2003 CMA Awards, while Hurt was nominated for 7 MTV Video Music Awards and won a Grammy for Best Short Form Video, and Give My Love To Rose won a Grammy for Best Country Male Vocal Performance

I have never reveiwed an album before but when I saw that this album did not have any reviews on it I had to add one.
This album is amazing and contains some of the most heartfelt music you will ever hear. Hurt and Personal Jesus are both wonderful. The story based songs and his wonderful voice make this an album I go back to time and time again.

Love it.

I own all the Johnny Cash American Recordings and have listened a great deal to them all. All 6 albums are good, although my least favorites are the first and fifth ones. Of the whole lot, still, this is the one to take to a desert island.

A Man Comes Around is recorded at a time Cash's health is getting worse. One senses the urgency in delivering the tunes and yet having the strength and power to fulfill such a mission. As on Unchained and Solitary Man, Cash took many cover songs and made them his own. Cases in point are songs like U2's One and Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down. On this album Cash really pushed the envelope, taking even very well known classics and making them, for those who hear them, in a sense his own.

The power is evident on the opening title track in which Cash melds together quotations from the bible forming a coherent song about the approaching hand of death; he obviously means business. The following track, Hurt, is, of all things, a Nine...Read more

This CD is wonderful. So heartfelt. If your kids are into today's music, this would be a good transition CD to give them a taste of OLD country- introducing them in a "cool" way to Johnny Cash and maybe influencing their taste of music. The real reason I wrote this review is because it needs LOTS more 5 star reviews and that one 1 star review is totally bunk.
