Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. --Colin Escott

Comment: My dad had this album on record waaaaaaay back. Sure brings back memories to hear such cash classics like "Dark as a Dungeon" and "Orange Blossom Special" and his classic redention of "Green Green Grass of Home".
From start to finish this CD is a 10 star CD! Seing how I can only give it 5 stars, it will have to do. This is a true classic album by the Man in Black and a must own....a MUST own!

Summary: Johnny Cash Started To Visit Prisons For Concert Purposes In The Late 1950s. 2010-03-15
Comment: This must rate as not just a Johnny Cash milesone in live recording, but one of the greatest live albums of all time.
The voice, the sincerity, the choice of material, the atmosphere, it's all here.
Top tracks, well all of them, however with Dark As A Dungeon, his voice is so strong and true it's impossible to put into words.
Cocaine Blues is a dyamite of a song and finally Greystone Chapel leaves the inmates with a glimer of hope.
Essential for anyone who loves modern music.

Summary: J R CASH 2009-12-22
Comment: Those poor sad people who only gave this 1 & 2 stars must lead a very disturbed life.Johnny Cash was the king of country music and always will be.Im not to sure on one of the 1* votes that mentioned Carrie Edwards. If im wrong correct me but didnt she come from the American x factor ,where as Johnny used to sing and write songs from his early days.If the 2* &1* are reading this,go and buy some of Johnnies other albums,he made manyand there must be one you will like, until then !.

Summary: Must Have for Country and Rock Fans 2009-10-30
Comment: I'd managed to go over a decade collecting a few songs from this album, but never owning it in its entirety. Buy the album. It's completely worth it. There are the classics like At Folsom Prison that everyone can sing along to, songs you need for a crazy day like Cocaine Blues, and Busted for those of us who are suffering from the present economy.
It's livelier than most live albums, with brief humorous dialogue between Johnny, June, and the tough prison crowd.
