Product Review
Product Description

Blame It On Gravity is the seventh studio album and the first new album in 4 years from alt-country pioneers Old 97 s. The album finds the band turning up the amps and returning to the satisfying crunch with a mix of rock, punk, pop and classic country that defined the band s sound on earlier albums. The band credits the new album s enthusiasm to their return to their hometown of Dallas, TX to record, the first time since their initial independent release. The band, still comprised of original members Rhett Miller, Murry Hammond, Ken Bethea and Philip Peeples, deliver what they believe is the finest album of their 15-year career.

Summary: Astonishing. 2008-08-30
Comment: What I can't believe about the Old 97's is how long it took this dedicated, hard core, extremely critical music fan to find them. Not only is this album among the most well crafted popish, rock and roll records that I have heard in the past five years, the truly astonishing thing is that it is really no different than the quality of the music these folks have been putting out for nearly two decades. Outstanding. I have now listened to most of their music and it is hard for me to find a true misfire among the songs on any of their albums. Thoughtful, smart lyrics, twisted, dark, fun, off beat time signatures, and lots of unexpected twists and turns on a very tired genre. Going to see the Old 97's in Sept during Austin City Limits and then will catch them in Buffalo in October. They may be a cult sensation, but I think they are one of the best bands making music in the states. They should be much much bigger than they are and you will have a real treat moving through Blame It On Gravity to their full catalog, as I did.

Summary: Another great release from an amazing lyricist & band 2008-07-30
Comment: Fantastic cd; great, clever lyrics; updated sound, but still hard-charging guitar licks. Great addition to The Old 97's library!

Summary: The Old 97's put out another good pop-fest of an album 2008-06-25
Comment: This is another good pop album from the Old 97's with a lot of toe tapping melodies and some great jangly guitar work. It's not as alt-country sounding as their earlier masterpieces like "Too far to Care" or "Wreck Your Life", but there's still a lot of good material on this new album. Overall, not a bad song on the whole thing, and that's saying something. For the ultimate Old 97's experience, they need to be seen live. But in the meantime as we wait for them to come back to town, this disc in the CD player will do just fine. Oh yeah, and also a thumbs up to their previous live album, "Alive & Wired".

Summary: fast and fun 2008-06-13
Comment: The boys are in fine form on this one. More solid front to back than "Drag it Up". I've always been partial to the uptempo thrashy songs from the 97's, but I have to say that I really love "Color of a Lonely Heart". This one's gonna stay in heavy rotation for a long time in my music world.
