Once again a Canadian perspective helps to bring out the best in American roots music. Like the Band, these three women of the Great North have taken the traditional sounds of their southern neighbor and made them uniquely their own. They inflect the acoustic intimacy of public domain tunes like "Reuben" and "In My Time of Dying," modern classics like Townes Van Zandt's "Waiting Around to Die," and Peter Rowan's "Midnight Moonlight," and their own songs with only the best and most appropriate elements of their punk, trip-hop, and Motown influences. As in the work of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, you have to listen closely to hear how Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton, and Trish Klein veer off from the past into the future: a soulful melisma wrapped in Ford's whisper, a hint of a funk groove in their arrangement of "House of the Rising Sun," Klein's electric guitar peeking out between her banjo and harmonica. Chinatown taps into the quiet power found on the back porches of what Greil Marcus called "old weird America," and with nary a musical misstep, qualifies as a masterpiece. --Michael Ross

Summary: Happy But Not Toooo SWEET it's a good album!!!! 2008-04-28
Comment: the album starts out with ''is's not happening'' a good little song. The cover of 'waiting around to die' is stark but well done. Also I loved their version of 'house of the rising sun' is great,it's about time this song was covered by a female band,as that is the way it was intended to be played. 'Doggsong' makes me sad ,as the animal lover that I am. The rest of the album is so listenable,it's definitely worth buying.Try it you'll like it!!!

Comment: One reviewer writes, 'Another one for the "No Depression" poop pile.' I note from their reviews that their tastes run pretty hard to Dead White Guys. No problem with that -- to each their own -- but if you sometimes listen to artists with a pulse, give the BGTs' lovely music a shot, perhaps along with some other stuff from the No Depression alt.country pile (otherwise known as some of the most vibrant and important North American popular music of the past 20 years).

Summary: Some of the best of modern bluegrass (4.5 stars) 2007-10-31
Comment: "Blue Horse" will always be my favorite of the Tanya's work, because I heard a lot of the content live. Not to say this isn't a great CD. My favorite is their cover of Townes' "Waiting to Die;" however, the whole CD is very good and very worth listening to.
Who'd have thunk a trio of Canadian women would so have bluegrass nailed? Just in general a very listenable group with great takes on both standards and new material.

Summary: Another awesome CD...Great job Tanyas! 2007-10-15
Comment: I already own the other two titles by the Tanyas and love them both.
Now that I've given Chinatown a few listens, I love it as well.
You'll never find another group like the Tanyas. Their sound is unique and harmonies are totally enchanting. Buy a few copies and give them to friends. Highly recommended.

Summary: Second and best effort 2007-10-13
Comment: I can't get enough of their blues/folk/bluegrass/? sound, and Chinatown is their most interesting and versatile of their three releases. I've 5-stared all their cd's, this one needs a 5.5. Its great easy listening, or intense listening for the incredible lyrics.
