His triumph on the talent-seeking Nashville Star series gave Chris Young a promotional push toward the stardom that this well-crafted debut will likely ensure. With a husky baritone that can sound surprisingly supple and mature, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter touches all the bases. He's the goodtime drinking man on "Beer or Gasoline," "White Lightning" (not the George Jones classic), and "Who's Gonna Take Me Home," and he's the man who soberly faces the ultimate price he's paid for drinking on the tearjerker "Flowers." He's as romantically sensitive as a chick flick on "You're Gonna Love Me" and "Center of My World," and he's the lusty lover boy on "Lay It on Me." He's all heartache on "Drinkin' Me Lonely" and all party on "Small Town, Big Time." And it's hard to imagine a goofier novelty song on border relations than "Your Way José," which could be condemned for perpetuating ethnic stereotypes if it didn't make the singer sound dumbest of all. While it may take a few more releases for Young to establish his artistic identity, he's already been designed as the perfect commercial product (produced by Buddy Cannon, who has enjoyed such success with Kenny Chesney and Sara Evans). --Don McLeese

Summary: Chris Young 2008-08-13
Comment: I heard about Chris Young from Nashville Star. I found this to be a very good cd for a starter album. Most people might think that some of the song have no merit. For his first album I found his song selection very attrubital to his delevopment. I think that we will have a very big star in Chris Young, and his delevopment will continue to grow, and his music will show that. I enjoyed the whole cd, and found merit in every selection. I am looking forward to his next achievement.

Summary: Pleasantly Surprised 2008-06-16
Comment: I purchased this CD because we're going to be seeing Young at the state fair in August (opening act) and I wanted to familiarize myself with his music. I have to say, from his MySpace page there were a few songs I knew I'd like, but I was pleasantly surprised with the rest of it.
+ "Beer Or Gasoline" is...well, truth. xD It's a funny song you're gonna love because you know what it's like; you only have so much money, and what do you need more - gas or a drink?
+ "You're Gonna Love Me" - Not my favorite, but it's not bad; just one of those "If you like X, you're gonna like me" kind of deals. (The tune's nice, but compared to other songs on the CD it's a bit too bubblegum.)
+ "Drinkin' Me Lonely" - One of the reasons I really wanted to buy the CD; it's a ballad, and it's gorgeous. Perfect insight to how stubborn a drinker can be.
+ "White Lightning Hit The Family Tree" - The kind of family reunion you always wanted to go to. xD Hilarious; we'll leave it at that.
+ "Lay It On Me" - Eh. 'You're Trouble - bring it on' relationship kinda song; s'not bad, but not the best.
+ "Burn" - Inspirational. Actually not that bad.
+ "Small Town Big Time" - Another 'pretty good but has been done before (and better)' one. Still pretty good, though.
+ "Flowers" - The unexpected best-of-the-CD, for an angst junkie. You don't expect the song to take the turn it does; one minute you're bouncing from the previous track, then you're bawlin' your eyes out 'cause of this one.
+ "Center Of My World" - Another type that's been done before, but I love this song nonetheless. The music's nice, and his voice complements it well.
+ "I'm Headed Your Way, Jose" - Best. Song. Ever. Main reason I bought the CD, 'cause I die laughing every time I hear it. xD
+ "Who's Gonna Take Me Home" - Like "Flowers", only it's not angsty and you'll die laughing (I say 'like', but I really mean 'another surprise track you'll love'). Honky tonk music at its best. xD

Summary: Great Debut CD 2007-10-05
Comment: Let me first say: THIS is a great album... 1st song to last song.
Second, I can't believe this CD isn't bigger than it is. I also can't believe that country radio hasn't jumped all over it and him for that matter. Yes, he did win a reality show (Nashville Star), SO WHAT?! The dude can really sing! I saw him live at the Iowa State Fair in August, and he rocked! He may be country, but he absolutely ROCKED!
Yes, many of the songs are about alcohol & drinking, maybe too many cliches, but they are still great songs. I guarantee you'll have your toes tapping, singing along.
I haven't taken this CD out of my vehicle's CD player since the concert.
