Tom T. Hall writes songs for children, he says, because they have a lot of the same interests, including the quest for simplicity. "One day I just found that we got along great. They understood me," he says. And in this compilation of songs from the '70s and '80s, Hall demonstrates his knowledge of the magic between children and animals and the thrill of taking a trip with the imagination, especially to Hall's own Fox Hollow farm, where such characters as Sneaky Snake, Randy Raccoon, and Ole Lonesome George, the basset hound, await. With the storytelling skills he gleaned as a child in the hills of Kentucky, Hall makes many of his songs into fables. "The Song of the One Legged Chicken," for example, teaches a valuable lesson about disability and difference. While other songs bring soothing comfort or merely raise a smile ("A mink wears a mink coat the whole year round"), and still others encourage play-acting, they all become treasures by the record's end. Packaged with a sing-along booklet. --Alanna Nash

Summary: Country Songs For Children by Tom T Hall 2008-06-22
Comment: I got this CD to be used in my car when I travel with my Granddaughter who just turned 5. We see each other almost everyday and she is in my car for 10-20 min at a time. She loves all the songs. When we get to where we are going she will not let me stop the song until it is ended. She really likes the following songs Sneaky Snake, One legged Chicken, I Care, and all the others. Songs all have good value statements that a child should hear.

Summary: Tom T. Hall: Great for Kids, and adults too! 2008-05-22
Comment: Tom T. Hall (b. 1936) has a keen sense of how to connect to children. Most of these songs were released in the mid seventies as part of the Fox Hollow album which I was given as a young child. I recently bought this album for my three year old and she loves it as much as I did when I was her age. His songs have a timeless quality that still sound good after 35 years to both children and adults. Tom T. Hall's vocals in "Songs for Children" are easily understood and fun to listen to. Songs like "Sneaky Snake" and "The Mysterious Fox of Fox Hollow" are funny and clever. Other songs such as "I Care" and "I Feel Pretty Inside" are written to bolster children's self confidence. Tom T. Hall's storytelling quality is best evidenced in "The Story of the One legged Chicken", and while it is best described as country music, fans of all genres will find something to like. Consider this unique collection as a gift for a birthday party over toys, as I have done, and see for yourself how children enjoy Tom T. Hall's songs today, as much as they did when Mr. Hall wrote them.

Comment: I really really want Saturday Morning Songs on CD, but this is great, too. Tom T. Hall's voice is so comforting and fun at the same time. I cherish my memories of Saturday Morning Songs and I can't wait to learn all the songs on Country Songs For Children with my daughter.

Comment: We raised our 30 year old son on these songs and now have it on CD for our two granddaughters. Great song for sing-a-long grandparents.
