Summary: Desparado Stories 2006-07-11
Comment: Ballads of Jessee James, Cole Younger,Belle Star and others are done with accuracy and style. Strawberry Roan done with Chris LaDeoux is the best ever recording of this old favorite. The West is going to get wilder is so wild you'll wear out the CD in the middle!

Summary: Not as warm as it could have been 2005-07-25
Comment: My favorite song on this selection is, El Paso. I love the arrangements with the brass that adds the warm Mexican environment and when you close your eyes to listen to the song, you can't help but feel you are hanging out inside Rosa's Cantina. You can see the wooden tables, the dancing girls, the liquor, the guitar players, the long bar, and every scene imaginable in the town of El Paso.
Here is what I found that was disappointing.
Soon after the fair gunfight:
The part I felt that took away from the song was when the verse; "Just for a moment I stood there in Silence. Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done. Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there, I had but one chance and that was to run"
This verse makes the song. He wasn't a cold blooded killer. He was jealous but by cutting that verse out, he didn't seem like a sensitive man who was in love with his girl. I remember asking Wild Windy Bill McKay, who worked with Roy Rogers, what he thought about that verse. He replied that he wasn't a bad cowboy he was a just jealous and when he was jealous, rage took over. Windy went on to say that the cowboy didn't mean it as it was the crime of passion that over took. Pointing back to that verse, it paints the cowboy's warm sided character. I think if Michael Martin Murphey would have recorded that verse, then he would have recorded a classic that would rank number one with Marty's. I somehow believe that the verse Martin Michael Murphey cut out was Marty Robbins' favorite. I also feel that if Mr. Marty Robbins were here, he'd say to Michael, "Hey you did a great job. I almost like it better than mine. I do have a question though? Why did you cut out that verse?" Just ask Little Jimmy Dickens as to how he feels about this verse. I give it a 3 fir effort but had that verse been in there, I would have given him more than the 5 stars if I could. I gave a lower grade because I felt that there was a lack of respect for the original artist. I know that every artist is different, and they each feel the song differently. But, it came across with mixed signals. He comes across as a cold hard bitter killer because he doesn't take the time to at lease show some respect to the young boy he killed in a fair gun fight, but instead he runs off and heads to Rosa's back door to run and catch the fastest horse he can find so that he can run away. If he would have not edited the verse, the song would have been consistent. There seems to be a small hole and having that lyric in there, would have made the song tighter.

Summary: A Natural Follow up 2004-04-23
Comment: Once again, Murphey resurrects cowboy classics. Many deal with the exploits of legends of the West, both the "white hats" and the "black hats". If you've enjoyed MMM's early recordings of cowboy songs, this is a natural. If you didn't enjoy the earlier collections, you've got a loose connection somewhere and you'd better get it checked out. On this CD, Murph is joined by various guest artists who contribute a nice touch to the finished product.I bought this as a result of "Cowboy Songs" and "Cowboy Songs II" and haved played it over and over. Overall, it holds up well to repeated listening and is usually in my "travelling collection" of CDs that I take with me on the road.
