In the notes accompanying this expanded reissue, Rodney Crowell explains that the working method behind his 1988 classic was to "work fast and don't think." The philosophy paid popular dividends, spawning an unprecedented five country chart-toppers, including "She's Crazy for Leaving," "After All This Time," and "It's Such a Small World," a duet with then-wife Rosanne Cash. Through passing years and changing trends, this music has lost none of its freshness, immediacy, and cut-to-the-bone conviction. Incorporating echoes of Buck Owens ("Above and Beyond"), buoyant roots-rock ("I Know You're Married"), and vintage rockabilly ("Crazy Baby"), Crowell's thematically linked song cycle tracks the convolutions of a complex marriage. There are two more diamonds ("It's Lonely Out," "Lies Don't Lie") among the concluding trio of previously unreleased demos. --Don McLeese

Summary: great songs! 2007-09-30
Comment: I bought the tape version of this album years ago, and now I bought the CD so that I can listen to it in my newer cars. I have friends who loved the songs and are now Rodney Crowell fans. This is by far one of his best albums.

Summary: Not my cup of tea 2007-09-19
Comment: I'm a fan of later-day Rodney Crowell and not a fan of the purer country idiom from whence he came, so this album, while technically competent (could RC be anything else?), is a bit too "country" for my tastes.

Summary: Rodney's most commercial album 2005-08-08
Comment: Rodney has achieved considerable success as a musician, songwriter and record producer but his determination to do things his way has resulted in a patchy career as a performer - not because any of his albums are anything but brilliant, but because they rarely appeal to mainstream fans. Nevertheless, Rodney showed via this album that he could appeal to the masses. It was by far his most commercially successful album, yielding five number one hits on the American country charts.

The big hits were Above and beyond (a cover of an old Harlan Howard song that originally provided Buck Owens with a major country hit), It's such a small world (a duet with then-wife Rosanne Cash), I couldn't leave you if I tried, She's crazy for leaving and the Grammy-winning song, After all this time. The opening track, Crazy baby, is an upbeat rocking song featuring nifty piano playing by Barry Beckett but I wonder what the track might have sounded like with Jerry Lee Lewis or Marcia Ball on piano. Barry is good but not in their class. Of the other tracks, I particularly like I know you're married and I never knew I could lose you. Brand new rag and Last waltz, also excellent original songs, completed the original album. This re-mastered edition features three bonus demo tracks recorded at around the same time.

This is undoubtedly a classic album. Whether it is Rodney's best work depends on your perspective. Nevertheless, this remains by far Rodney's most popular album and serves as a great introduction to Rodney's music.

Summary: Diamonds & Dirt -Rodney Crowell What a Gem!!!!!! 2005-05-05
Comment: Rodney is a fabulous and gifted songwriter. I got this CD after I found out Rodney was the songwriter who penned for many of my favorite artists. The one that stands out most for me is "Making Memories of Us" which Keith Urban made his own on his latest album.
I had to investigate a man with that kind of emotional draw. I can't believe I've been missing out all these years. Rodney has a beautiful voice and the entire album is great. Hard to pick just one favorite here. She's Crazy for Leavin', I couldn't leave you if I tried, are tops!
This is one album you need to add to your collection. It's destined to be a classic.
I'll be enjoying this CD for years to come and be buying Crowell's other albums too.
