New Orleans Funky Meters are one of the most powerful live acts around, and theres no better place to see them than at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, in front of a mix of in-the-know locals and rabidly enthusiastic out-of-towners. Luckily, cam

Anybody who knows anything about funk music knows the Meters. The original line-up is lauded as the best funk band ever by a lot of people. Just listen to the original recording of Cissy Strut and you'll see what I mean; Zigaboo Modeliste is one of the funkiest drummers to ever hold a pair of sticks. This DVD captures the updated version of the band (The Funky Meters) with Russell Batiste on drums and Brian Stoltz on guitar at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz Festival. From start to finish it's an incredible show. Russell Batiste is just as funky as "Zig" but with the control of David Garibaldi and chops of Will Kennedy. He's one of the best new drummers around and this set showcases that. His performance on "Little Old Money Maker" is worth the price of admission alone but when you add in George Porter Jr., Art Neville, and Brian Stoltz... all you have to do is just mention those names and you can expect good things but when you add to that the incredible sound and video quality and good...Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is As Funky As It Gets, December 21, 2008

These guys are as funky as it gets. If you've never had the pleasure of seeing these American Masters practicing their own form of voodoo, purchase a copy of this disc. These guys wrote the book on funk and nobody, but nobody can do it like these guys. This is like getting a chance to sit in Picasso's living room and watching him paint. You will enjoy this infectious groove and the amazing musicianship and tight performances on this disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars The (Funky) METERS jam like no one else!, January 31, 2005

The Meters (aka the Funky Meters) pretty much invented funk music. We'll give James Brown and company some credit too but these guys are masters in their own right. Their classic early records are a must but perhaps suprisingly their live shows 35+ years later are just as captivating. This JazzFest performance was captured in 2000 and the band moves from one song to the next as if they were all borne from the same funky groove. Not a clunker in the bunch. From the classic "Cissy Strut" to the equally classic "Look-ka Py Py" these guys have the power to entertain. A truly inspired live set. And reason enough to head out to see these guys live every chance you get.
