Product Review
Amazon.com essential recording

Following the bland, smothering urban-cowboy era of the early 1980s, Randy Travis's loose, flexible vocal phrasing and stripped-down, traditional accompaniment was the breath of fresh air. Along with Dwight Yoakam and George Strait, Travis epitomized the new traditionalism that dominated the remainder of the decade. While his Haggard and Frizzell influences were obvious, his relaxed delivery and flair for understatement set him apart. His voice, plangent and brimming with heart, its twang neither softened nor downplayed over time, remained at the core of his music. Beginning with his first No. 1, "1982," through the snappy "Too Gone Too Long" and the exquisite "I Told You So," Travis and producer Kyle Lehning created a body of music that has stood the test of time, not to mention more recent trends. While this collection isn't complete, it's a fine survey of the pinnacle of Travis's career. --Rich Kienzle

Summary: Neo Traditionalist Supreme 2005-10-24
Comment: When Randy Travis blew into town, Country Music finally got off of it's knees and took it's place back at the front of the line. Thank God for Randy, Dwight, Patty, Marty, and George Strait. This album covers those Travis numbers that topped the charts, and when you listen to this CD, you'll soon realize why they reached number 1. Included here are "1982", "Look Heart", and "Diggin up Bones"...all great traditional country hits. But my personal Randy Travis favorite is his cover of Sonny James' "It's Just a Matter of Time". Many compared Randy to George Jones, and he did in fact carry forward some of Jones' syle; but there was no doubt that Randy was more influenced by Lefty Frizzel. This is a great album, well worth your money.

Summary: Not until his latest ... 2001-09-22
Comment: First, I second the statement of the previous reviewer, that Randy Travis may be the most underappreciated (and in some Nashville circles...with the exception of the print media)underrated artist,to every hit the streets of Nashville.
Not until his recent release,"Live..It Was Just A Matter Of Time" have I enjoyed an album more. Every one of the songs here on "Greatest #1 Hits, is a clear example of what good music, and talent can provide.Hours upon hours of enjoyable listening pleasure!

Now on Live" one can hear the continued allegience to what country music use to sound like. More importantly, you will quickly come to understand, why this particular artist has been able to endure, when so many others have long faded into the fartherest recesses of our memories.

If you love this Greatest #1 Hits, you will surly want "Live" which also comes in DVD format as well as CD,Cassette or VHS.
In finishing this review, I just want to say, Randy did the industry a favor once, now it is time for the Industry (including broadcasting) to do him one, and start playing this mans music once again, for all to hear and enjoy!

Summary: Defining Album for a Defining Career 1999-12-25
Comment: One of the most underappreciated artists of our time puts it all on the line. Finally, all the best of Randy Travis is compiled into one of the greatest albums in recent memory. This is classic country at its best
