The Guitar Sounds of James Burton,

I was pleasantly surprised to see this gem come out on CD, and could not order it quickly enough. Most people know James' resume, having played guitar for so many great artists, especially Elvis. But he is a great artist in his own right. He is a pleasure to watch live, continually proving that you don't need to jump up and down and smash your guitar to get attention. James Burton epitomizes the word "cool."This CD has twelve tracks, many of which are instantly-recognizable classics ("Hound Dog," "Mystery Train," "Suzie Q" and "Johnny B. Goode"), but there are tracks on this disc which James wrote himself, "Rock and Raunch" and "Long Reach," which, not surprisingly, play to James' strengths as a picker. The two songs are the first tracks I listened to upon getting the CD.The third song I tracked was "Polk Salad Annie," which is cut one on the CD, and a longtime favorite of mine from the Elvis years...Read more

If you love this guys work with every one from Dale Hawkins, Ricky Nelson, Elvis's Costello and of course Presley, Johnny Cash (Johnny 99 album)Roy Orbison (A black and white night), Emmylou Harris, Frank Sinatra, the Byrds you name it. As he said himself he's worked with everyone...except Barbara Streisand, you will need to buy this one.Obviously this genius has been so busy with all of the above he has forgotten to make any more solo recordings and as such this is pretty much it, execpt for his album "Corn Pickin and Slick slidin'" with Ralph Mooney.Recorded during Elvis's absense from a studio session around 1971, the Guitar Sounds of James Burton, utilises Elvis's TCB band to full effect on such standards as Mystery Train and Hound Dog. Mystery Train is my favorite track with some howling Telecaster licks which will blow your head off.He also touches on Tony Joe White's Polk Salad Annie in a similar version to the one that the King was doing live and he puts the...Read more

Production simply short-changed Burton,

This CD is a must for the diehard collector, given that it is
a singular effort, but falls far short of demonstrating the
skills of the talented Burton. Once can't help but believe that it was hastily produced in someone's spare time with little regard for quality and marketability. If you really want an appreciation for Burton's guitar mastership, just listen to various Elvis and/or Rick Nelson songs where Burton plays lead
guitar with skill and panache. This CD is quite disappointing in comparison.
