As the lead singer and co-writer for Hootie & the Blowfish, Darius Rucker always eschewed overt R & B, and fixed the band’s music in roots rock. Now on this solo album, Learn to Live, he immerses himself in the typical Nashville themes of home, hearth, and spirituality, with varying results. His sturdy baritone knows how to carry these messages, and he displays an ease with country phrasing. Furthermore, he's assembled a fine passel of pickers, from mainstream guests Vince Gill, Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley, to 'grassers Aubrey Haynie and Bryan Sutton. All this works fine on the radio—the album and the single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It," which logged the number one slot on the country charts. But while Rucker pays fine homage to Buck Owens with the intro to the humorous divorce declaration "All I Want," and nurtures his inner redneck on the barroom anthem "Drinkin' and Dialin'," too many clichés weave their way into his lyrics, and the overall sound is that of amiable, cookie-cutter, country pop. Next time out, let’s hope Rucker reaches farther back into his South Carolina roots for a more authentic backwoods connection. -– Alanna Nash

Summary: Just Not That Good 2010-07-16
Comment: I love Hooty and the Blowfish. I also love a lot of country music. I figured this CD would be good just because of it being the same singer, but the songs are very bland. There aren't any that stand out accept "Don't Think I Don't Think About it." This doesn't even sound like a country album.

Summary: Music for life! 2010-05-25
Comment: Honestly, I really bought this ablum because I'm a Hootie fan. Actually downloaded it and forgot I had it until I came across it a few days ago. Talk about missing out!

This album is about life, love, hurt, pain, joy!! You will be able to relate to ALL of the songs on this album. They are all good. This a rare gem as finding not only good music, but good albums nowadays is becoming a rarity!

A keeper for my collection! This is good stuff!

Summary: Beautiful melodies, nice rich vocals 2010-04-29
Comment: Very nice collection of country tunes. In the wonderful tradition of country music--and Darius as a songwriter--these songs are little stories that take you someplace else. His voice is so rich and evocative, it is really a pleasure having Darius purr in your ear. And good for him not being afraid to follow his passion and make country records along with the Hootie music.
Customer Rating: 5 Star
Summary: Greater than expected and who doesn't love that voice! 2010-04-15
Comment: Darius has the writing ability and the voice to land in any music category, but he really nails it with the country genre.
