Product Review

The 1950s, '60s and '70s were prime decades for popular country music; many songs found popularity far beyond the bounds of the genre. My Music's Legends Of Country brings back country's greatest hits from its greatest stars. From Patti Page's 'Tennessee Waltz' to The Bellamy Brothers' 'Let Your Love Flow', these performances by the original artists prove that when it comes to these classics, we're all a little bit country. Features Glen Campbell, Hank Locklin, The Browns, Bill Anderson, Ferlin Husky, Crystal Gayle, B.J. Thomas and more.

This is another addition to the excellent My Music concert series seen on PBS. Unfortunately due to the fact that many of real country music's pioneers are no longer with this, many of the performers on the show may not be recognizable to the devotees of the current Nashville pop music masquerading as country music, but it is a stellar lineup of some of country music's legends. One performances (Patti Page) is taken from a previous concert, but all the rest of these performances were original to this concert. There were some archival performances (Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, etc) shown during the PBS broadcast of this show, but they are not on this DVD. For all that, however, it is an excellent show and I would highly recommend it.

Performances:
Tennessee Waltz - Patti Page
Southern Nights, Rhinestone Cowboy, Wichita Lineman, and Galveston
- Glen Campbell
Send Me the Pillow That You Dream On and Please Help Me I'm Falling
- Hank Locklin...Read more

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff...Read more

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

I hope there's a Volume II.
