A Great Live Set,
September 11, 1999 By A Customer

For all I know, I'm one of those guys the title refers to. As live music goes, these guys are outstanding. They played in Tulsa a few years back and performed some of the songs on this cd. They are, in a word, FUNNY. The lyrics are smart, with a mean streak, and they play the music as good as or better than the artists they're parodying. Their original material is great, too. How many guys do you know who can play a guitar like Jimi Hendrix on an instrument shaped like a map of the U.S.A.? Purple Haze/Green Acres is a comedy classic. I would love them to release some of their other work to cd: songs like Shake a Snake, The Fish Song (possibly the punniest song ever written), Three Mile Island, and Blue Hairs Driving in My Lane.Keep 'em coming, boys!

Songs like "The Fifties Suck", "Elvis Was a Narc", "Libyan on a Jet Plane" and "The Universal Adjective" (not to mention "I Was a Froggy", the deadliest parody *ever*) deserve five stars. Some of the spoken "comedy" on this disc deserves *no* stars. So we'll compromise at four, 'cos you can skip the dumb stuff.Pinkard & Bowden write brilliant parodies (other titles "Blue Hairs Dribin' in my Lane", "She Thinks I Steal Cars" and, my favourite of their parodies "Music Industry" which skewers both "Islands in the Stream" and the Nashville Establishment brilliantly) and almost-equally-brilliant originals (of which you should try to track down "Dylan for Dollars").This album collects some of each. "The Fifties Suck" bombs nostalgia in general and the "Happy Days" kind in particular. "Libyan on a Jet Plane" is completely tastelss and...Read more

Old Hippies Never Die (?),

If you have ever bought into the theory that "old hippies never die, they just flash back," maybe "D_ckh__ds" will help dispel that myth. Richard Bowden was once Linda Ronstadt's guitarist (back in her original 'fat-little-county-girl' incarnation), and right now, he's touring with Don Henley, an 'artist' I have absolutely NO use for, but whom others may consider 'hip'). And Sandy Pinkard, God bless the man, has written just about every "my woman done lef' me, so ah gotta git drunk" Country & Western song. They met in 1982, and, apprasing the state of "current music" (whether rock or country) then, they decided to pool their talents, musical AND comedic. And re the latter on this remarkable CD, they note, for instance, that all Elvis' vast arsenal of 'medications' are "out at Graceland somewhere safely hid"; they reflect on a certain TV evangelist, and observe that "crawfish heads ain't the ONLY thing that gets ... down...Read more
