Darrell Scott writes a story song like few others--folks like Townes and Dolly. I've been waiting a long time for Long Ride Home to come out, and I've been excited to hear what he would have for us. I'm not disappointed. Darrell's voice, soft, sweet, and so very emotive is just wonderful. He never does too much, never does too little, just sings straight ahead, giving it his whole heart. I think what I appreciate most about his songs is that they feel honest. It doesn't feel like he's making up something he's never seen, but something that he has lived. It doesn't hurt that this is a very strong set of tunes, with a mix of slower reflective ballads and some more rough and tumble bar fare. "Hopkinsville" in particular is a wonderful boogie-woogie, steel guitar drenched foot stomper, and I really love it. Pedal steels are everywhere here, and they are fantastic. "Out in the Parking Lot" is one of the most affecting duets I've heard in a long time. I guess I shouldn't be...Read more

Long Ride Home is the perfect name for Darrell Scott's new album. Listening to it makes you feel right at home, at over an hour in length it's certainly long, and along the way it's one hell of a ride. From the "Sunday Morning,Coming Down," feel of "It Must Be Sunday" to the ragtime inspired, "Still Got A Ways To Go," and at all points in between Darrel Scott blends his expert musicianship with masterful storytelling to create an immensely satisfying musical experience. Blending the syles and influences of fellow troubadors Buck Owens, Guy Clark, and Joe Ely, Darrell delivers track after track of earnest, musical poetry. With expert phrasing (both musically and lyrically) Darrell is able to take a mundane scene like the parking lot of a local bar and turn it into a scene from a Tennessee Williams play. With a vocal assist from Guy Clark, "Out in the Parking Lot" transforms a nightly event into high theater. Darrell shows off his playful side too in "No Use Living For Today" singing,...Read more

Darrell Scott has a great relaxed vibe on this one. SItting on the back porch, just playing music. By his own admission, the songs are ones that were just laying around, so probably not his best writing, but it really doesn't matter. With guest stars (Guy Clark, Patti Griffin and Hargus Pig Robbins for starters) they sound happy...and that admittedly has been missing from some of his most recent albums. I tend to gravitate toward albums where the musicians sound like they're having a good time, and you just imagine there's a bottle of spirits in the middle of the room and someone's dog is just laying down in the middle of everything. I really enjoyed this one
