Lyle Lovett and His Large Band remains the big man's most ambitious album in many ways. A smart split is effected, and not only between styles--the horn-driven swing of the first half backs the record's wittiest, slyest songs, while the country-folk numbers are among Lovett's most pensive. He's not so mournful that he can't raise an eyebrow at heartache, though: try "I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You." --Rickey Wright

Summary: Lyle Lovett is 'Class, Charisma, and Consistency.' 2008-07-30
Comment: As a singer-songwriter, Lyle Lovett is known for his "class, charisma and consistency." He has mastered the art of blending folk, big-band swing, blues, jazz, country, and gospel in his music, while riding dirt bikes and tangling with bulls in Texas in his spare time. His 1989 release, Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, hooked me with its bluesy opening track, The Blues Walk, and then sealed the deal with Lovett's cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" (included in the soundtrack of the movie The Crying Game) and the cynicism of "I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You." Not only is Lyle Lovett and His Large Band a Grammy-worthy album, it is my personal favorite Lovett album. Complete tracks include:
1. The Blues Walk 2:25
2. Here I Am 4:02
3. Cryin' Shame 2:29
4. Good Intentions 3:15
5. I Know You Know 3:58
6. What Do You Do / The Glory Of Love 3:09
7. I Married Her Just Because She Looks Like You 3:14
8. Stand By Your Man 2:45
9. Which Way Does That Old Pony Run 4:09
10. Nobody Knows Me 3:06
11. If You Were To Wake Up 4:27

Summary: Best Lyle Lovett Album 2008-07-27
Comment: From the moment I saw Lyle Lovett sing "Here I Am" on the Tonight Show, I was hooked. I bought this cd the very next day and I love it. There's not a bad song on the cd. Other Lovett cds are also excellent, but this is the one I return to over and over and over again. Other favorites on this cd: What Do You Do/Glory Of Love, Good Intentions, Crying Shame.

Summary: Lyle has Style! 2008-05-07
Comment: This is one of my favorite Lyle CDs. The only thing better is to see him perform live, or get one of his DVDs. What makes Lyle so special is his style of delivery. He is a first rate entertainer and I just can't get enough of his music.

Summary: Was a fan - now I'm a FAN 2007-09-19
Comment: Lyle's first 2 albums were very good and got me hooked but this and Joshua Judges Ruth are 2 of my all-time favorites. Don't just listen in shuffle mode but make sure you hear Cryin' Shame, Good Intentions and I Know You Know back-to-back-to-back. And whatever you do, make it a cheeseburger.
