With her debut album appearing at the age of 28, Martha Wainwright has lived in a musical world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger
Album Description

Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call "musical royalty." She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus Wainwright, and appearances on albums by Rufus, the McGarrigles, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) and Linda Thompson, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP BMFA earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The London Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of that self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads.

Summary: Amazing music, an absolute MUST - Martha's 1st!-THE BEST 2008-10-28
Comment: This is the kind of recording I like to sit, and listen to intently. The poetry of the lyrics and music swarm around, and it's very stony music indeed. All I can say is, I'm not going to critique specifics, and simply say this is an amazing trip. The CD really gets to me. I cannot listen to it intently and not lose a tear or two. The lyrics are sung so heart felt. Martha is so vulnerable, so feminine, so honest. To hear her is to love her. Not to mention that everyone else in her family puts out amazing music as well, you have a lot of new stuff to explore if you've never listened to Martha, Rufus, or their dad Loudon Wainwright. Their mom and aunt are the McGarrigle sisters. So Martha grew up surrounded by musicians and song, and this is her first solo effort, which is in my opinion far greater, unusual, personal, and moving than any other release in their whole family, and far outside of it. You go girl! Bring your own hanky, it will test you. If you have any human soul at all, this recording will kick your butt. It's somewhere around Stevie Nicks/Bernadette Peters/Dolly Parton meets Kate Bush and Pink Floyd. Ahhh, that doesn't help at all, just get it and listen over and over to the little girl breaking out song of the century: BMFA!!!

Summary: Beautiful Album 2008-03-18
Comment: Every song on this album is just absloutley beautiful. It's a folk-rock album...kind of in a way, it's so many things rolled into one, it's just a beautiful CD that I don't think we'll be seeing anything like anytime soon. It doesn't have a lot of instruments and her voice is in full view, as well as her haunting lyrics. With lyrics such as the ones on 'This Life': 'I got the gun for my head/Wounds the brain, free instead', or those on 'Who Was I Kidding': 'Met the pain before dawn/Should never thought it would or could be easy/Been inclined to carry on/Hold my hard head and watch you walk out on me/See the tears they fall down on my hard head/Forevermore'. Her lyrics are just great, her music is beautiful. I could go on and on. I'm just telling you that you should definitley buy this awesome album!

Summary: Amazing! 2007-11-25
Comment: Her voice, her lyrics, her style, her talent are astounding! She's tough but feminine at the same time and I really relate to that. I just adore her and this cd. She has her own unique sound that really shines among all singer songwriters today. My favorite song is Bloody MF'ing A'hole. Factory is great too. All her songs are great and I look forward to owning everything this woman makes. I don't want to build her up too much, I am content just keeping her all to myself! Although with a talent such as hers, there is NO WAY she'll remain an opening act. She's just getting started and she is going to be HUGE!

Comment: I really enjoyed this CD but my husband does not like it at all. She reminds me of Dory Previn.
