More Good Uns

More Good 'Uns is indeed full of plenty of good 'uns, but you won't find anything of Greatest Hits quality here. This is not to say the album isn't funny because it most certainly is. The Maddest Man I Ever Saw gets the album off to a great start and You're On My List leaves 'em laughing at the end. In between, there are several hunting stories, including one about good old Hi-ball, the best coon huntin' dog to ever live; according to Jerry, Hi-ball was so smart that he wouldn't even bark when he wandered on to someone else's land chasing a coon. One thing that distinguishes this recording from other Jerry Clower albums is the inclusion of several stories about New-gene Ledbetter, known for his meanness and propensity to lie all the time. At one point, Jerry expounds upon the fact that Southerners are just born funny, giving two examples of how something deadly serious is innocently transformed into comedy by Southerners. You may have noticed the Vegas sendup on the cover. This 1981 album was originally released with a more conventional photo of Mr. Clower on the sleeve. Still, you'll have a lot of fun with these stories. Sure, some are old. But you've never heard them this way before. The Ledbetter family have went through some evolution. His first album, From Yazoo City, Mississippi Talkin', introduced Uncle Versie, his aunt (later referred to as Aunt Pet), and Marcel. The next album, Mouth of the Mississippi, brought more family members, such as Claude and Newgene. We learned that Newgene was quite ornery. The 5th album, Live in Picayune, had Newgene improving after he joined the 4-H Club. Mr. Clower credited the influence of his boyhood 4-H Club agent for him getting a degree in agriculture. After graduation, he got a job as assistant county agent, in charge of 4-H Club work. Later albums have Newgene as a big liar. This one includes such stories.
