2008 reissue. Originally released in 1999 and widely regarded as one of the best albums of that year, New West is proud to reissue one of Steve Earle's finest works. The Mountain marks a radical departure from Steve Earle's previous works as it was his first wholly Bluegrass album. He later revealed that he had made the album as a tribute to the founder of bluegrass music the legendary Bill Monroe, who had died in 1996. In order to help flesh out the songs he had written for the album, Steve Earle called upon the famous Bluegrass band of Del McCoury. The album was a critical success and yielded Earle's seventh Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album in 2000. 14 tracks. New West.
I really can not put into words how awesome this collaboration is, but I'll try. Steve Earle, the man who did such albums as Guitar Town (Remastered)(Bonus Track) and Copperhead Road, has reinvented himself several times over the years. His first albums had a rockabilly Johnny Cash / Bob Dylan type feel to them, but this is Bluegrass music at it's finest.

There are few singer/songwriters like Steve Earle who consistently produce thoughtful, intellectually stimulating, and foot stomping music. This effort, together with the incredibly gifted Del McCoury Band satisfies on every level. Harlan Man, The Mountain, and Pilgrim are American classics. But then again, virtually everything on this album is.

This is just an outstanding recording featuring the great guitarist & song writer Steve Earl collaborating with the Del McCoury band, one of the best bluegrass bands out there.It is original American music.Needs to be heard!
