Product Review
Product Description
On her new album, My Turn, Tanya Tucker takes classic country songs originally recorded by male country
legends and turns the tables, giving classics by George Jones, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and Eddy Arnold a powerful spin from a woman's point of view. One of country music's greatest stars, few can match the emotional range of Tucker's smoky vocals.
Working with Grammy Award-winning producer Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam, Michelle Shocked, Roy
Orbison, Sara Evans), Tucker completely transformed the delivery and meaning of the songs with her earthy, passionate and unflinching style. From heartbreaking to tough-as-nails, the recordings are powerful as Tucker wrings new, unexpected emotions from these classics.
Guest artists include the Grascals, Jim Lauderdale and bluegrass stars Rhonda and Darrin Vincent, with
producer Anderson playing guitar on every track.

Summary: Tanya's tribute to her late father 2009-12-30
Comment: Many leading country singers have recorded covers albums, but this one is certainly up there among the best of them. Without the pressure of looking for hits these days, Tanya records whatever and whenever it suits her. For this project, Tanya selected some of her father's favorite songs and a producer, Pete Anderson, who could deliver the kind of album she wanted.

Tanya and Pete stuck to the original arrangements of the songs, but found ways to stamp their own identity on them. In particular, Tanya's version of Is anybody going to San Antone? (originally a country number one for Charley Pride) has a Tex-Mex feel to it, featuring Flaco Jiminez on accordion. Another notable inclusion is Big big love, which was originally a country hit for Wynn Stewart, but which I first came across via Barbara Mandrell's cover on her album I'll Be Your Jukebox Tonight.

Tanya had a hard job selecting just one song each from the catalogs of George Jones and Merle Haggard, but eventually settled for Walk through this world with me (George's biggest 1967 hit) and Ramblin' man (a big hit for Merle Haggard in 1977, but not one of his most famous songs). For her cover of You don't know me (Eddy Arnold), Tanya is joined on the chorus by Rhonda Vincent, one of the best bluegrass singers there has ever been.

Tanya recorded Love`s gonna live here (the Buck Owens classic) as a duet with Jim Lauderdale, and they sing it so well together. Other classics featured are Wine me up (Faron Young), Lovesick blues (a song from the twenties most commonly associated with Hank Williams), Crazy arms (Ray Price), After the fire is gone (Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn), I love you a thousand ways (Lefty Frizzell) and Oh lonesome me (Don Gibson).

When I first saw the track listing, I was surprised by the track selection, but knowing that these were the songs her father loved explains it all. It's a pity that Tanya didn't record this album while her father was still alive, because he would have been so proud. Indeed, all Tanya's fans should be proud to own this album.

Comment: Tanya's best album ever. Not a bad song on the album. Old songs and new producer (Pete Anderson) seem to be a winning concept. Tanya sounds like she used to some 30 plus years ago, and the way we europeans want her to sound. We never accepted the new Nashville sound. Welcome back to country Tanya. Can't wait for your next CD, hopefully in same style.
