Summary: Upbeat fun album mixes rock and country music 2008-05-26
Comment: Released at the height of the line dancing craze in Britain and supported by a TV advertizing campaign at the time, the track listing for this album shows how Brits adapted line dancing to suit their own musical tastes. Dancing of any kind not being my thing anyway, still less when there are rules about how it should be performed, I never joined in the craze but the music interested me.
Line dancing in America is inextricably associated with country music and when the craze first hit Britain, line dancing was performed to up-tempo country music as it had been in America, but choreographers later created dance sequences for rock and pop songs too, so this compilation reflects that mixture although some other line dance compilations limited themselves to country music. While this compilation contains 36 tracks, the accompanying booklet only contains instructions for dancing to six of them. If anybody still wants to line dance, perhaps they should knock a star off for not having complete instructions for all tracks (although the names of the dances associated with each track is given), but I'm only interested in the music so I don't mind.
Country music, nineties style, dominates the compilation but die-hard traditionalists won't find much to get excited about. Perhaps the highlight is Kimber Clayton's excellent cover of Jose Cuervo (originally a country number one hit for Shelley West). Kimber appeared to be on the verge of a major breakthrough in America, when label-mate LeAnn Rimes made her breakthrough. All the label's promotional budget was focused on LeAnn (represented here by One way ticket) and Kimber's big chance disappeared. An album of Kimber's music was eventually released in Europe though it didn't include Jose Cuervo, so this compilation remains the only album on which it was ever released.
Other country singers and groups featured include Twister Alley (Dance), Billy Ray Cyrus (Achy breaky heart), Desert Rose Band (One step forward), Alabama (Dancin' shaggin' on the boulevard), John Michael Montgomery (Be my baby tonight), Tim McGraw (I like it I love it), Kentucky Headhunters (Singing the blues), Delbert McClinton (Why me?), Boy Howdy (Bigger fish to fry), Scooter Lee (High test love), Chely Wright (Sea of cowboy hats), Confederate Railroad (Queen of Memphis), Ronnie McDowell (Smokey places), Terri Clark (Better things to do), Sammy Kershaw (Haunted heart), Kathy Mattea (455 Rocket), Wynonna (Girls with guitars) and Bob Woodruff (That was then).
Rock music is represented by a variety of artists, some but not all of which I'm familiar with from other sources. Among the more familiar names, at least to me, are Mark Knopfler (Cannibals), Beach Boys (Still cruisin'), Alannah Myles (Black velvet) and Rednex, who had a British number one hit with their song here, Cotton eyed Joe. If you're used to hearing a traditional version of Cotton eyed Joe, the dance version performed by Rednex may take some getting used to.
The line dancing craze may be a thing of the past but this album, filled as it is with upbeat rocking music, would still be great music for a party or other feelgood occasion.
