Summary: Didn't Connect. 2008-10-17
Comment: This is only my second exposure to Tony Rice. I didn't really care for the first CD I purchased- I played it a couple times and put it away and haven't got it back off the shelf. I don't even remember it's title. I thought I'd try him again with this tribute to Gordon Lightfoot. This one didn't connect with me either. Maybe it's just me. He is a perfectionist at his craft. The production value is high. The musicianship is flawless. I find him only an "ok" vocalist. When it's all said and done, he didn't engage me. In fact, I was bored. The music left me, frankly, wanting to hear Gordon Lightfoot. Take the track, "The Wreck..." I kept waiting for him to hook me in but he didn't. Lightfoot's "Wreck" has elements of mystery, sadness, a sense of loss and doom, etc. It tugs at the listener-it's moving. Rice's version is technically perfect but for me there was no emotion. Based on the other reviews of this CD that claim he is very emotionally expressive, I guess I just don't get it. I don't think I'll be purchasing another Rice CD.

Summary: Key word is "sings" 2003-06-18
Comment: Tony Rice is an amazing guitar player and i love him for it but I always thought that I was a poser for loving him more for his voice. Most people praise his playing first and foremost and i usually skip over albums of his that have no vocals. Well if you are like me and have embraced his fantastic voice then buy this album. Tony sings on every song, there are no flatpicking jams on it and most of the songs will bring tears to your eyes. This is a beutiful album whether you like G.Lightfoot or have never head his music. (P.S. he has Fantastic lyrics)

Summary: Great bluegrass-folk crossover 2002-07-11
Comment: A bluegrass-ballads tribute to songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. Sounds scary, doesn't it? But superpicker Tony Rice has been slipping these songs onto his albums for years, and this collection is excellent -- he has a real feel for Lightfoot's style. Worth checking out!

Summary: Heartfelt Brilliance 2002-05-02
Comment: Not only is Tony at his peak in many of these songs, but the musician line-up reads as a who's who of bluegrass. Ricky Skaggs, The Rice Brothers, JD Crowe, Jerry Douglass (of course), David Grisman, and more! So needless to say, there is some [kicking] music going on here.

But what is truly magical about this album is Tony's unabashed love for Gordon Lightfoot. Every word is heartfelt, every note holds an emotion. And this man can sing! And although the album is a collection of songs from his entire career, it holds together as a single unit well - a concept album with a twist. And while Tony's voice, guitar and overall talent are the shine on the album, Lightfoot's lyrics are its depth. Lightfoot sure knows how to write a song. And Tony knows how to perform them.

There's not a weak link in the chain, but keep an ear out for "Early Morning Rain", "Whispers of the North", and "Walls".

Summary: Tony Rice-Gordon Lightfoot who could be better 2001-06-02
Comment: I have enjoyed listening to Gordon Lightfoot for decades and this tribute is the best I've heard. Who could do a better job than Tony Rice. Excellant vocals and guitar. Whispers of the North, Home from the Forest,16 Miles, Song for a Winters Night what a great selection of songs.
