This is an all-star collection from the Sugar Hill roster of bluegrass artists. Unlike many such anthologies, this was not packaged to promote new albums by these artists, but rather simply to make available on a single disc some of the best bluegrass artists on the label. For example, the album kicks of in fine style with "That High Lonesome Sound," a tribute to Bill Monroe with whom Peter Rowan began his career in the mid-Sixties. The album closes with the Lester Flatt, Bill Monroe-penned "Little Cabin Home on the Hill" by Ricky Skaggs from 1979.You also hear Hot Rize do their version of "Walk the Way the Wind Blows," written by band member Tim O'Brien. [Kathy Mattea would later turn it into a country hit.] New Grass Revival turn in a stellar performance with "On the Boulevard." Bluegrass stalwarts the Seldom Scene deliver a moving version of "Long Black Veil." Child prodigy Chris Thile plays some stunning mandolin on "Shadow Ridge."
