Whether recording under his own name, collaborating with wife Julie, or contributing guitar work for a range of other artists, Buddy Miller has always put forth a resonant, earthy, even spiritual bearing. So it seems only natural that Miller would turn his focus to the gospel tradition. The songs here celebrate the innate goodness in even the most lost and perplexed among us, keeping sights on the unblinking light of hope at the end of the tunnel. This is still a rootsy affair, though the set is imbued with the social concerns that unite us all. Nondenominational in terms of religious affiliation, this album uses our common language of honest singing and playing, soulful grooves, and top-flight songs to make its points. --David Greenberger

Summary: rootsy, soulful goodness. 2007-02-22
Comment: overtones of gospel-tinted scottish r & b singer frankie miller, a bit of swampy tony jo white, a dash of the rootsy-side of springsteen, all a nice mix on this excellent disc. blues, ballads, rocking alt-country, and more than a little gospel can be had here, including an epic nine minute version of dylan's "with god on our side." all buddy miller recordings are well worth having. "universal united house of prayer" is no exception.

Summary: New Fan 2006-03-09
Comment: When I heard Buddy's music on GAC, I was blown away. What an amazing combination of Dylanesque cynicism, musical talent and honest, grass-roots Christian spirituality. This album is a must buy for anybody who yearns for the honesty of the '60s.

Summary: spiritual rather than churchy 2005-08-12
Comment: This is soul-touching music for people who don't DO churchy, preachy, didactic Xtian music. It's thoughtful, serious, soul-full.

Summary: Some great songs 2005-03-27
Comment: Buddy Miller's CD features his rough vocals and top-quality, heavy-duty guitar work plus a pair of screeching, ecstatic background singers, the McCrary sisters. On songs such as "Worry too Much," the results are spectacularly good. "Shelter Me" is another song I like a lot.

This is hard rocking, anti-war, socially-conscious, southern gospel type music. The touch is heavy handed on Bob Dylan's song, "With God on our Side." The tune is excellent but the words are simplistic, and Buddy drags the song out for 9 minutes. It pains my ears to listen to the words at the same time that I enjoy Buddy's marvelous guitar playing.

The concept of this CD is apparently to show that fundamentalist Christianity has a heart -- and a lot of soul. That effort succeeds and most of the songs on this CD are good or really good.
