Product Review

The Jerry Garcia Band - Garcia, his frequent collaborator bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt - played its first show with Nicky Hopkins on piano in August 1975. The ultimate session player, Hopkins' credits include work with the Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Jefferson Airplane to name a very few. While Hopkins' residency was brief with the Jerry Garcia Band, it played an important role in the group's shift away from big jams toward song-oriented material.

I remember us getting a Fm broadcast of the late show about a month after it happened and the memories attached to it. This release is a mix of both the early and late show from the Warner Theatre on March 18, 1978 and the performances are nothing short of stunning. Love In The Afternoon is one of my favorite Cats songs and this version is SWEET. Mystery Train is Jerry's Big River which, by the way, isn't a bad thing. The Harder They Come is it's usual self while Mission In The Rain and Simple Twist Of Fate are as moving as they come. Midnight Moonlight gets things back to a galloping pace and I love the with Donna and Maria sing backup on here. Next are a couple of more tunes from the then new Cats album. Gomorrah is played with a nice laid...Read more

I made a point of flying home for spring break when I heard that Jerry was playing the Warner.

It was a good show.

My big thrill was they needed someone to stand for the light focus, and I happened to be on stage. My moment under the lights!
