Sure, Waylon Jennings received the obligatory hosannas when he passed away in February of 2002, yet most of the ink seemed centered around his rebellious "Outlaw" persona, his personal battles, etc., etc. What about the music? Well, for those looking for proof of the man's musical prowess, this double-disc expanded edition of Waylon Live ought to do the trick. First released in 1976 as an 11-song LP, the album resurfaced on a single CD in 1999, adding nine tracks that were shelved when the originally intended double album was shaved down to a single vinyl disc. Now, it's a 42-track juggernaut that marvelously displays the breadth of Jennings's repertoire and the sinewy force of his Waylors. When the tapes rolled over three nights in the fall of 1974, Hoss and company were at the peak of their powers--growling menacingly at some times, purring seductively at others--with the steady, sturdy, unshakable rumble of bassist Duke Goff and drummer Richie Albright laying the groundwork and steel-guitar master Ralph Mooney vividly coloring throughout. Rest assured the 22 newly added tracks are by no means filler. On the contrary, as the set list for Waylon Live grows, so does its impact. --Marc Greilsamer

Summary: Solid Outlaw Country Gold 2007-11-03
Comment: This 2cd set contains the best versions of "This time" and "Just to satisfy you" ever recorded (studio versions included). This is Waylon at the top of his game and is my all time favorite live country cd. Everything else on it is also fabulous. I have both the early single cd release and the extended two cd version. I give this (the extended version) as a gift frequently to people. If you're a fan of outlaw country and you don't like this then you're not American friend. Buy it.

Summary: THE Waylon album to have 2007-05-09
Comment: One day after Waylon signed his landmark contract with RCA in 1974 granting him complete creative control he was booked to play CBGB's in New York city. At that time punk was king and the clientele of that particular establishment was predictably the saftey-pin-in-the-cheek crowd. When Waylon and Company stepped on the stage and looked out at the assembled mass he said "I don't know what kind of show y'all are used to, but this is a country music show."
Someone yelled from the back ofthe room "Who the &*^% are YOU??!"
Waylon replied "I'm Waylon G(& D^%$# Jennings, now shut up!"
He went on to do three encores.
On this disc he makes that statement again and again through the swagger, bravado and energy he expends on every song. There's no point in belaboring the obvious. It has been previously well documented that this is a quite hefty 42 track, two disc set chock full of Waylon goodness from beginning to end. The only thing I can add to what's been written is that this is more than Waylon's music. In the nearly two hours this disc takes up we get a glimpse the man's LIFE and his dedication to what he'd started going all the way back to his days with Buddy Holly. This is truly an amazing album. Summary: Waylon at its best!! 2007-01-11
Comment: I bought Waylon Live in 2001, the one that had the 20 songs in it and 2 years later I found out about this one....this one kicks butt!! If you like real country, not the one they are playing today this concert is a must. Its more than 30 yrs old and if you play it against the new country singers its better by far.

Summary: THE Waylon Album To Own 2005-11-27
Comment: I own a lot of Waylon Jennings albums but I have to say, I find myself playing this one on 9 out of 10 times. If you want to buy just one Waylon album this is the one to own, the recording quality is brilliant for a live album and the music IS alive. Simply great, I can't say enough good things about this CD.

Summary: They don't do it like this anymore... 2005-11-23
Comment: I just watched the latest "Country Music Awards" television presentation and it is amazing how far country music has fallen. This Waylon album, recorded at the zenith of country music is a stripped down, raw, electrifying recording of a band with so much talent that Nashville could not touch it. In the current era of slick, gilded, studio produced, over-manufactured vehicles for pretty, effiminate "country" singers posessing dubious talent, this album is a true testament to the musical genius of Waylon Jennings and the men that formed his band. Today's "country" music stars don't hold a candle to Waylon, and this album is all the proof you need.
