To the horror of their most obsessive fans, the surviving Beatles have proven more than willing to tamper with their pop legacy, as witnessed by the various facets of their massive, occasionally myopic mid-1990s Anthology projects (and the suspect notion of its faux techno-marvel "reunions"). In boldly revamping the soundtrack to their 1968 Heinz Edelmann-designed animated fable Yellow Submarine, the Fabs have shown they're not immune to the irony of the age either: their original involvement in the project was both tentative and minimal. This new version completely excises Beatles-producer Sir George Martin's charming, if sometimes maudlin, orchestral score, offering instead a new "songtrack" containing all the Beatles songs (standout cuts from Rubber Soul, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, in addition to the four originals unique to the project) featured in the film. The pre-announced "unreleased song" on the set turns out to be the original album's rollicking "Hey Bulldog", one of the last true Lennon-McCartney collaborations. "Hey Bulldog" was also the subject of both a previously excised sequence in the film and a newly edited in-studio video cobbled together from footage shot in early 1968 and previously used in vintage promos for "Lady Madonna". Though it may further upset purists, the band has allowed these tracks to be digitally remixed and remastered into 5.1 surround sound, imparting both a stunning clarity and a new perspective (as well as restoring a "missing" verse and the original six-minute plus playing time to "It's All Too Much") on some of the greatest--if obviously overexposed--songs and recordings in the history of rock. --Jerry McCulley

Summary: Hey, it's the Beatles! 2008-08-24
Comment: What can you say about the Beatles??!! My daughter loves the movie (it was my first movie when I was 3), so we bought the soundtrack for the car. We all love it, and we all sing along!

Summary: Great songs! 2008-05-02
Comment: I got this for my 2 year old granddaughter. She loves the movie and now can sing the songs in her room. She really likes the Beatles. She has no problems with identifing the music as from her "Submarine" movie.

Summary: GREAT! 2008-03-17
Comment: This is just a great compilation with perfect songs and just INCREDIBLE remastering by George Martin... definitely buy it, you wouldn't be dissapointed... Hey Bulldog, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is sounding in a mightier, better way, you can actually hear everything you could never hear before... I wish Martin would gather some money and remaster every single album of the Beatles in such a good way! 5 stars by all means!

Summary: The Best Beatles for children 2008-03-03
Comment: This is a perfect introduction to the Beatles for young children--and older children, too. You don't have to explain drug use, sex (Well, there is that line "Can I take my friend to bed?", but my daughter thought of it as a sleepover), or bad language to kids, but the music isn't sugary or insipid, like a lot of so-called children's music. All the tracks are strong (though I think "Hey Bulldog" may be its weakest track, a young friend assured me that I was wrong and it was "Awesome!"), and fun to sing along to. It's an album that moms can hear over and over without wanting to chew their paws off.

Summary: Great Beatles Introduction! 2007-11-21
Comment: The film Yellow Submarine really got me into Beatles music. It's the most joyous of their "adventure music", if that makes sense. It is music that takes you places, and if you've never heard the Beatles before (as well you might not have) you'll really be transported to a new World with these classic tracks.

There is great sound from these remasters, while still respecting the original audio engineering, which is nice. It's worth getting for newbies and for fans wishing for a new perspective on these songs, because the track listing lends itself to thematic analysis (it really does)!
